From: Slacker on 2 Apr 2010 19:34 iMac 21.5, SL 10.6.3. I've been using a Samsung S2 640 GB portable USB hard drive for Time Machine backups for about a month and it worked fine. Now, the drive is no longer recognized by the computer and does not show in either Finder or Disk Utility. I switched cables and tried each of the four USB jacks in the computer but no joy. I plugged the S2 drive into another Mac and it shows up just fine. Also, I have several other USB portable hard drives and they all show up fine fine on the iMac. But I need the S2 to work on the iMac-- as it had been for a month. What am I doing wrong here?

Added info: On the iMac in question, the USB hard drive shows in the system profiler-- though not in Finder or Disk Utility...

Have you examined the system log to see what errors are there regarding the hard drive (or I/O in general)? -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me. One additional piece of data though: I bought another identical Samsung S2 drive--- and it doesn't show up either. I may need to pack the iMac up and cart it over to the nearest Apple store-- thought with the iPad madness this weekend, I'll probably not be able to get anywhere near the stgore-- much less the help counter...

There's only one system log. Could be a problem with the USB port (or hub if you have it connected to a hub). Have you tried switching to another USB port to see if it works on another one? -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me.
