From: Ed Kual on 26 Jan 2010 01:27 I am a new immigrant to Mac after using windows for many years. On windows I use Xnews as my binary news reader/downloader which was small and easy to use. On Mac I have found Unison nice and easy to use except that it freezes quite frequently (rotatinf color wheel) and I need to force quit it. This happens with versions 1.8, 2, and 2.3 under SL. I was wondering if others have experienced the same problem and how it can be solved. Thanks

BTW: If you send the same message to multiple news groups separately, it forces the rest of us to download your message multiple times. Also, it means if someone replies to one of your posts in one news group, the other places you posted the message will not see that reply! This is known as "multi-posting", and is generally regarded as inconsiderate. If you want to post the same message to multiple news groups, please include all of the news groups, separated by commas, in the "Newsgroups" line of a single post, like so: Newsgroups: comp.sys.mac.system,comp.sys.mac.apps This way the message is simultaneously posted to all specified news groups. More importantly, when someone replies to your message in one group, that reply is automatically sent in all other news groups to which you sent the post! This allows all involved to see the entire conversation, no matter which news group from which they access your post. This is called "cross-posting" and is the proper way to do it. -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me. E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM filter. Due to Google's refusal to prevent spammers from posting messages through their servers, I often ignore posts from Google Groups. Use a real news client if you want me to see your posts. JR

I have heard of this problem before with Unison (googling Unison here might help), but have not noted a direct solution per se. I would direct my attention to Panic's support crew, who have been very responsive to me in the past, though with the roll-out of Unison 2, I have found them unresponsive. I'm sure they are busy. Perhaps you have too. One of the things that seemed a likely candidate with 1.8 was having lots of unread as well as pick-and-chose read messages in your database files. I think they get confused. So if there are only a few specific newsgroups you consistently peruse, perhaps marking them all unread, followed by marking them all read, will diminish the size, potential complexity and corruption of the file where read/unread is kept. Just a guess. -- Thank you and have a nice day. |
