Sorry, I posted a "broken line" command with no further advice.

Full command should be (all in one line):

***
update-alternatives --display firefox-javaplugin.so
***

"update-alternatives" output shows that the wrong java plugin version is
being picked (openJDK instead Sun's Java one).

Mmmm, try first to setup with "update-alternatives", but in this form
(one line):

***
update-alternatives --config firefox-javaplugin.so
***

Look if the above command let you choose between the two options and
choose the Sun's one.

If that does not work, you can try with the steps provided in Oracle/Sun
site (manual way).

update-alternatives --config firefox-javaplugin.so now returns:

There is only 1 program which provides firefox-javaplugin.so
(/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/i386/gcjwebplugin.so). Nothing to
configure.

This has been my problem all along -- how to get update-alternatives to
recognize *any* alternative except the ones provided by debian packages,
the one mentioned above, the sun-java6 6-12-1 set of packages and java-gcj.

Likely the next step, unless I can use the java version in
lenny-backports non-free.

I used the "update-alternatives" method when I installed the JRE package
from Debian contrib repo. That worked fine.

As long as the java installation is performed from "the ouside" (by using
Oracle-Sun own packages) maybe this method stops working :-?

Tell us how it went :-)

Those packages are for etch, and are even older than those in lenny.
