To create a virtual pc you need, as far as I know, vmware server.
After registration you can download for free at the VMWare webpage.
Im running a Windows Vista and the latest OpenSuse Linux on virtual
machines for testing.

I only need to run guest OS'es on a desktop host. I
think VM Player is faster than the server too. Now that
the Player can also create virtual machines, I can't
see any compelling reason to use the server. I don't
really know the in's and out's of the two. Perhaps
you can convince me otherwise :)

VMWare Player 3.0 does have the feature to create your own VMs. It is
almost everything VM Workstation was a short while back.

Aside from the painful registration process, this is a really good product!
It is more stable, in my experience, than Virtual Box that had a bad habit
of messing up my keyboard and mouse in the host WinXP Pro.
