The Guide says the Installer will let you choose to install only the plug-in for the QT Player. That doesn't seem to be true. If you use the Uninstaller, it keeps telling you you're installing. There are some great kidders in the Flip4Mac Labeling Department.

Yes - just installed it myself, as it's a convenient way to view video files that otherwise won't play in QT Player or Windows Media Player for Mac OS X (version 9!).

The ".plugin" file is a QuickTime component, which allows any software that uses QuickTime (7) to play supported WMV files. (If you pay for higher ranked versions of Flip4Mac, the plugin also allows editing and conversion to other formats, or creation of WMV if you spend even more.) The ".webplugin" file is a web browser plugin which will be used directly by a web browser to play WMV on web sites. I expect that if you didn't have this installed, but did have the ".plugin", then the QuickTime webplugin would be used, and it would invoke the Flip4Mac component (".plugin"). This would mainly affect the user interface presented for playing WMV on a web site. There may be good reasons for doing both, e.g. the ..webplugin may allow streaming video while the .plugin doesn't, or something like that. -- David Empson dempson(a)actrix.gen.nz |
