You're right, the Dock is nothing but a list of links to things that
exist anywhere else.

If you want to remove something from the Dock, you pull it off (which is
probably what she did).

If you want to put something on the Dock, you drag it to the Dock.

So grab hold of the Applications folder, and drop it back on the Dock.

The one complication is that the Dock is divided into two parts. The
first part contains links to applications. The other part contains links
to folders and files.

To put an application into the Dock, drop it into this second part of
the Dock - the part after the divider.

That divider by the way is one mechanism to resize the Dock - just drag
the resizer to see it at work.

I'm not sure about this empty hole in her Dock - you may be able to drag
the nothingness out of it, if you see what I mean.

The only thing I'd worry about is the fact that the Dock is on the
left-hand-side, which is obviously incorrect, and all normal decent
sensible people have it on the right.

Unless she is left-handed, perhaps? I don't know, just it seems to me
the only reason you might want to do that ;-)

Mmmm. I'm right handed, yet a Dock leftie. OP - go Finder, Macintosh HD,
Applications - drag that folder to the Dock, to the portion below the
serrated divider, where the cursor goes <I>. Worked for me, but having
just tested with another folder it seemed to want to copy the contents
of the folder to the dock . . .

The help page for the Dock refers to it as "the Dock's separator line".

It sounds like the "empty hole" is actually the dock separator line,
especially as the mouse changes shape to an | when hovering over it.
