deselect & select instead openSUSE updater.
ZMD can be removed with no problems;-)
zmd =/= the software installer, yast is it
zmd is just a libary for yast.
openSUSE updater uses the "ZYpp" libary with Yast.

and add repo's then you don't have to search for the rpm's over internet ;-)
add Repositories & then you can search over yast itself ;-)
http://en.opensuse.org/Package_Repositories

yast - software - installation source --> give url like
http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/

I have for openSUSE 10.2 @ a mirror in belgium:

I am running 10.1 with enough memory, a really slow processor and zmd.
My figures are not quite as bad as yours but software updates are
pretty turgid.
Most of the time I simply do not care - unless the package in question
is the kernel or something which is liable to break when a new version
is being installed, I simply let the system get on with things in the
background.

Far more annoying to me is that zmd grabs the processor *every* *time*
I boot up, screwing me if I want to do something which needs lots of
processor. It is like extending the boot process by 10-15 minutes
every time. At least the simple things work during that time.
Roll on 10.3, I hope it supports my hardware. If it does not then
I'll have to finally kill zmd myself.

You might install directly with rpm. Something like 'rpm -i package.rpm'
Check the documentation.
Or you might want to try the smart package instead of the installer
built in Yast. Smart is pretty fast and nice, somehow similar to
apt-get in Debian based distributions. Install smart and
type 'smart --help'.

Thanks to everyone who responded -- my updates are snappy fast now
that ZMD is out of the picture. I'm once again a happy openSUSE
user. I spent the afternoon today learning and configuring Samba (The
O'Reilly book, by Carter et. al. is *very* good). Now I have an
awesome file server for the four WinXP clients in my home. Even on my
Tbase100 wired ethernet infrastructure, opening a 32meg Word doc is
very fast. I may go to gigabit but may not need to until I start
streaming video :-)

Very cool stuff :-)
