It's true that HD can be choppy in both VLC and Quicktime player. But IMO your explanation is wide of the mark. I managed to fix the problem in VLC by tweaking some preferences, and in Quicktime player by installing Perian, suggesting to me that it's not the hardware capabilities of the card or the Mac's access to the capabilities that cause the problems with HD playback.
