Hi all,

On the news just now, it would seem many workers at the Foxconn
factory in China would rather commit suicide (and 11 or so have
already this year) than continue making the likes of the iPhone and
iPad? ;-(

All down to poor working conditions apparently.

Anyone know the typical markups and at what stages of this sort of
gear?

Is Apple a 'Fairtrade' supplier do we know?

Cheers, T i m

I've just written a snottogram to The Independent as they had a full
page on this rubbish in Wednesday's edition. The problem is that none of
the articles mention the national suicide rate.

So Foxconn = 10 (or 11 depending upon which report you read) per 400,000
workers. The national rate for Chinese males, according to the World
Health Organisation, is 13 per 100,000.

On those figures, Foxconn are actually doing very well.

Love it, Snottogram. Must use that sometime.

And more to the point, Apple *publishes the results* instead of just
sweeping them under the carpet.

I can't see a link in any of the media I've seen. The only vague stab
has been a correlation between age and suicide, and a 'lost generation'.
But hardly the hard scientific data you seem to have seen - where did
you get it?
