From: EGON on 5 Apr 2010 03:31 Hi! Our server has become really unstable! •When try to start Internet Explorer, the window doesn't show up but the process is started. •So, I can't reach Windows Update. •When open Server management and try to open Backup, Server management hangs and has to be killed hard. •When trying to re-run the "Internet" wizard in Server management, it hangs when the different steps are supposed to be configured (progress bar hangs att network configuration). •When reboot, the server hangs (or takes a really long time, i have not waited that long) on Logging out ... have to kill it hard. •When restart, from login until you see desktop, it takes hours! Does this sound familiar for anyone? Any hints on what to do? Except for the problems, the server is actually working fine, mails, domain and so on. Regards /Marcus

Perhaps a new version of Internet Explorer, or a new version of your Antivirus software? Anything useful in the event logs? Jim
From: SuperGumby [SBS MVP] on 5 Apr 2010 05:38 also, how much RAM? What sort of drives? What sort of load (task manager, or better yet performance monitoring) is the box under? From: EGON on 5 Apr 2010 14:26 Hi! As far as we know nothing new was installed when it stopped working. Windows Updates are applied manually and no major upgrade of AntiVirus has been done lately. I added a new user awhile ago and then I realized that some services had stopped working (webmail). I restarted the server and then it hanged during shutdown progress and I had to kill it hard, and there we are. The fault might have been there earlier, I really don't know as the server isn't frequently rebooted/used. Nothing useful in the event logs, what I can see. I have also changed to Verbose logging regarding start/shutdown, login/logoff ... didn't give me any feedback. One strange thing is that after you login it says: "Loading your personal settings" for a few minutes and after that it says "Applying your personal settings" for about 1-2hours!!! before one can see the desktop. From: EGON on 5 Apr 2010 14:26 Hi! We the server has 4GB RAM and a lot of available diskspace and so on, I don't se a performance issue / hardware issue.
