I agree with your strongly-worded warning. While we don't know how
widespread overall it is, we do know based on these forums and others that
there's an uptake in "The updates just killed my machine" type of messages
above and beyond than the usual level.

I've tried to do an in place upgrade of XP from my CD on boot up but it does
not recognize my hard drive. I can't load from last known working copy or
from safe mode.
I fear the worst. How can this happen from a MSFT update???

it's actually a STOP 0xC000021C error msg. Can't reboot into safe mode or
from last known working save point. Can't do an inplace upgrade with my XP CD
as my hard drive is not recognized.
Uggh!

From: another guy on
This may help. Unplug the computer, open the case, disconnect the hard drive
for a few seconds. Plug the hard drive back in, close the case restart with
CD in place and do a repair from the CD. hope this helps.

From: Patti MacLeod on
The drivers for the SATA connector should have been provided on a disk from
either the motherboard manufacturer or the SATA PCI card manufacturer (if
the SATA controller is not on the motherboard but is on an expansion card).
If you cannot find the driver disk, perhaps the drivers are available for
download from the manufacturer's website.

When you attempted to do an inplace upgrade with your XP CD, at what point
did it not recognize your hard drive? Did you get to the Welcome to Setup
screen where it asks if you want to set up Windows XP now, repair a Windows
XP installation using Recovery Console or quit Setup without installing
Windows XP? If you are able to access that screen, see if you can enter
Recovery Console by pressing R. If so, and the version of XP that is on the
"problem" computer was NOT factory installed, then see if you can perform
the steps in this link that I provided in a previous reply:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/

I haven't had much experience with SATA, as I just recently acquired a new
computer that has that technology, but after reading Noel's post and your
reply, I attempted to access Recovery Console (using both a slipstreamed
with SP1 install CD and a retail with SP2 install CD) without loading the
SATA drivers from floppy. I was able to access Recovery Console using both
CDs, and was able to log into my #1 Windows Installation (XP with
SP1).......I didn't try logging into the #2 Windows Installation (XP with
SP2).
