Replying to my own post, again...

Just after I sent the last post I realized that I had not done an 'ifup wlan0' after loading the ath5k module. Once I got home I booted up, loaded the module and did 'ifup wlan0'. Unfortunately, it still does not work. I get an error saying the the device wlan0 can not be found. What am I forgetting to do?

Well, the ath5k module was not being loaded. Unfortunately, even after I run:

modprobe ath5k

I still have no wireless. The module shows as being loaded by lsmod,
but no wireless networks show in wicd. Is there something else that I
need to do after loading the module in order to find my wireless
networks?

Thanks, Andrei. That did it. I had seen that message and should have thought of that, myself. I now have a fully updated (to Squeeze) eeePC. My only problem now is that I still have no wireless. I installed wicd, but it says that it does not detect any wireless networks. When I boot the eee into eeebuntu 3.0 it finds my wireless and several others without any problems, so the hardware is good and the wireless is there

I then remembered that the wireless was probably not configured, since it did not manage to do the install by wireless. I had to plug in an ethernet cable to install. So I added:

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp

to my /etc/network/interfaces file and rebooted. Still no wireless detected. I guess the next thing is to make sure that the driver is being loaded. It should be using ath5k. That should have been installed during the installation, even if it didn't use the wireless for the install, but if so, I don't know what else to try in getting the wireless working. I will verify that the next time I boot it up.

If the module is loaded, does anyone have any ideas on what I should try next?

....but the new kernel won't install.

Because you are installing the kernel in the same run you can force udev
to accept the upgrade by creating a specific file. I don't recall what
file, but it is mentioned in the error message.

Oops! I missed that request for data at the bottom of the post. My mistake.

Since I have no wireless on the laptop and my flashdrive is mounting read-only, the relevant line from lspci is:

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (rev b0)

there was NO output from 'grep wlan /var/log/syslog'

Providing the infos I suggested in another message (outputs of 'lspci'
and 'grep wlan /var/log/syslog')?

The difference being the lack of the Realtek network adaptor under Debian. That is certainly where the problem lies. Why would Debian not detect the adaptor at all?

I had already installed wireless-tools, which did not automatically load the module, but I did that myself. The problem appears to be that, instead of providing wlan0 as the wireless device, this creates pan0, which I did not look for. Running iwconfig showed me this. If I run:

ifconfig pan0 up

then I get no errors and

ifconfig

shows the interface. Unfortunately, it DOES NOT turn my radio on and wicd, of course, shows no wireless networks.

I am really at a loss here. Are there any other ideas, or suggestions that I can try?

That was an oversight. I recently started using Yahoo! web-mail, instead of Thunderbird, so that I could access my e-mail away from home. If I can't find a way to make it work better with Debian lists I may have to go back to Thunderbird, anyway.
