For me, I just installed Wicd, set the daemon to start at boot, and voila,
done.

Yes (64-13), but mine doesn't have the mystery "w" in it, and it has a date
of 2009-04-28, so I know I didn't touch it.

Willing to bet that that was a clean install. I just looked at
/etc/rc.d/rc.wireless.new. No w switch passed to wpa_supplicant. Just
one of the steps to upgrading when you dont want anything in /etc
overwritten.
