Next: photo data disappears with iPhoto, MobileMe
From: Tom on 25 May 2010 18:27 Hi, I have two questions about a portability issue. When Linux was my main OS, I used to use gwenview for organizing and viewing my photos, and it allowed me to add comments or descriptions to the photos. It seemed to write this information into the EXIF part of the file (almost always JPGs in my case) or some other standard section of the file for file comments. In photos from those days, I can still see and access those comments on my Mac with programs like Xee or Gimp. I am rather irritated that this doesn't seem to be possible with iPhoto. There is this description field which can obviously be edited straightforwardly, but I don't see all those comments from my pre-Mac photos anywhere, and I don't know where the information I would add to my current photos in that description field would be stored; apparently not in the file comment section. In principle, I think iPhoto would be a good tool for organizing my photos, including my old ones. However, the prospect of copying all the comments of thousands of old photos by hand into the description field in iPhoto when importing them is a total showstopper. My questions are therefore, - How does this comment/description thing work in iPhoto; and - Is there a way to import my old file comments into the description field automatically? Thanks, Tom
