Thank you very much. In services.msc the auto updates was not running. I set that to automatic, and I was able to get my new updates. Apparently this auto updates in services is different than the option to have Windows get updates automatically (the one if the Control panel). Slightly confusing

But if (Control Panel >) Automatic Updates had been enabled, the Automatic Updates (and BITS) services would have been enabled, too. Are you aware of the fact that there's are Automatic Updates (AU) settings other than Automatic? See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525 If you choose the "Notify Only" setting, AU will notify you of available updates in a timely manner. Then you can decide whether, when, and how you want to download/install updates.
