From: Jim on 13 Mar 2010 17:38 I keep automatic updates turned off. I just went to update site and was not allowed to proceed. I got error 0x8DDD0018. It tells me I have to have Automatic Updates running. Is this now true? Previously I always did my updates manually. XP Service Pack 3
From: LD55ZRA on 13 Mar 2010 17:58 Absolutely not. It is strongly recommended to stop all updates on Windows XP because M$ updates post SP3 are designed to sabotage your system so that you buy Windows 7. If you want to install a specific update, then you need to know the KB # and then go to Microsoft website and search for it. You could use Microsoft Update Catalogue but yo will have to install its ActiveX to use it and you will need to use Internet Explorer version 6 or later. <http://catalog.update.microsoft.com> hth Jim wrote: > > I keep automatic updates turned off. From: PA Bear [MS MVP] on 13 Mar 2010 19:14 0x8DDD0018 - ErrorAUDisabled Does enabling Control Panel | Automatic Updates correct the problem? => You may receive an error message that contains the "0x8DDD0018" code or the "0x80246008" code when you try to download updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910337 Could the problem be that the Service named Automatic Updates (as well as BITS) isn't running? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)? -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 Jim wrote: > I keep automatic updates turned off.
