The criteria was cheapest calls Oz to UK
Nothing cheaper than free

Afterwards you could bring the phone back and unlock it

Except it's not a lot of good being free if it doesn't work reliably is
it?
And I did try skype on 3 when down under.

I didn't need to do it in the end. Turns out the place I'm staying as
broadband so I'm just skyping back to the UK. At 14p/min it's dear for
mobiles but all landline calls are in my Skype unlimited package as long as
I use VPN to give myself a UK IP.

Now that's interesting. For part of our trip down under, we stayed with
our Aussie friends who have broadband so I just used skype on my laptop
to call back home when staying with them. I did upgrade to skype
worldwide for the duration of the trip so that's probably why it worked
(i.e. using an AU IP) without affecting the skype payg credit.. (as a
backup to that I have SIP VOIP as well but other than testing it just
see if it would work OK while out there, I didn't use it)

Best Regards...
