The most typical process is that some time shortly after delivery, while the lady and the baby are still in the hospital, a hospital clerk or nurse comes up to the lady and asks her what the baby's name is for the birth certificate. That is also the way the paternity is established, by the nurse/clerk asking the lady - birth mother - for the information to fill in the blank. Sometime later, the clerk puts a pile of completed birth certificates in front of the delivery doctor to be signed - which certificates contain the information obtained as above from the mother. So, in that sense the father doesn't really have much to do with it :-) Men are lucky that women let them seem to have so much say in things :-) -- Mike Easter
