From: JohnF on 7 Mar 2010 16:53 Looking for a free (preferably open source) linux app to convert wav files to mp3 (I see mpg321 goes the other way). Google has lots of hits, but I can't get it to cough up a good program. Thanks, -- John Forkosh ( mailto: j(a)f.com where j=john and f=forkosh )

I did notice lame briefly discussed in http://en.linuxreviews.org/HOWTO_Convert_audio_files after posting (there seem to be some unintended side effects at the very bottom of that page:). Couldn't find ffmpeg on my own, but now have plenty of hits after you told me what to look for. Lame ran through the usual configure/make/make install without any problems (though I had to manually mv lame.1 to the man1/ directory). Haven't used it yet though, and haven't downloaded ffmpeg yet. Thanks again for the spot-on suggestions, -- John Forkosh ( mailto: j(a)f.com where j=john and f=forkosh )
