Looking for a free (preferably open source) linux app
to convert wav files to mp3 (I see mpg321 goes the other
way). Google has lots of hits, but I can't get it to

Thanks a lot, Lew. I did notice lame briefly discussed in
http://en.linuxreviews.org/HOWTO_Convert_audio_files
after posting (there seem to be some unintended side effects
at the very bottom of that page:). Couldn't find ffmpeg
on my own, but now have plenty of hits after you told me what
to look for.
Lame ran through the usual configure/make/make install
without any problems (though I had to manually mv lame.1 to
the man1/ directory). Haven't used it yet though, and haven't
downloaded ffmpeg yet. Thanks again for the spot-on suggestions,
