Have started receiving a bunch of .ics email attachments from a working
group I'm involved in.

Since I've used Now UTD & Contact as my primary calendar and address
book apps for decades, and am very happy with them, I don't exactly
welcome these.

Anyone have comments or pointers to discussions of the pros and cons of
iCal vs Now; or ways to handle these .ics files outside of iCal?

When iCal creates a .ics it uses vCalendar format, which is an open
standard used in a wide variety of software. I'd be very surprised if
Now is unable to handle them, though since I don't have Now I couldn't
say how. It might be as simple as setting Now as the default app for
..ics, or there might be more to it. Regardless, though, these are not
in any way "iCal files" any more than JPEGs are "iPhoto files".
