Hmm, I start Trillian:

http://www.trillian.im/

(from there) and I get the:

"Welcome to TriLLianASTra 4.0 Build 119" and a big 'New Account"
button.

Clicking on that takes me to the Astra registration process?

Maybe you have an older version?

I can't try the OSX version as it's not out yet (so like Adium but in
reverse).

Is it the same actual program (rather than version) as you have there?

I sent a link to an example iChat text chat screen asking what they
thought? You know what they said? "Is it for children?"

Now you don't care what anyone else thinks because it works for you
and that's all the counts but just because it's designed by Apple or
loads of effort has gone into the UI doesn't mean it's *better* for
everyone (and can't be because *better* is comparative and personal).

Look at all the issues I had signing into iChat in the first place (in
comparison with nearly every other IM client I've tried). Would you
say that was a good example of the behaviour of a good IM client?
Being 'cute' is of no use if you can't get it running?

Out of interest, was iChat your first exposure to IM clients?

As for you and I ... we know we are probably opposite ends of the
Marmite scale, 'cute' for you is often 'pointless' to me and that's
fine. Maybe you like things that are different and I like things that
are familiar.

Anyroadup, like I said, "one man's meat ..."

Well, yes, I use trillian in windows and adium in OSX, I wasn't
particulalry looking for a different machine build of either of them,
they both do the same job.

Mine doesn't have anything about astra in it - maybe these things have
changed. I have had it for years.

However, when i install it on another machine, i don't press new
account, I just go to the prefs and put my details in

I will try it on my new machine next time I use it

Wouldn't that be an indication that you both like things that are
familiar?

I now suspect you have V3.X, they are now offering V4.x. I've found a
copy of 3 and it looks like it will just start up as you say.

With this V4 I don't think you'll get he choice.

Ok.
