Thanks all - when you say 'Calendar app' do you mean something distinct
from iCal?

Oh duh - only just realised it does tasks as well!

I have one more numpty query re voicemail. My phone was implying there
are unread mesages (when i was in tunnel with no visual vmail) but now
I'm home I can only get visual vmail and it's not showing any messages
outstanding.

As best as I can work out, the red dot (with no number) means "I can't
contact the Visual Voicemail server, so I'm kinda guessing there's
probably voicemail, but I could well be wrong". In fact, I've only once
had voicemail after seeing the numberless red dot...

You can add events with alerts and also sync it to something like
Google calendar.
