I had an odd thing yesterday where I was sending a text message and the
phone suddenly rebooted, and got stuck on the apple logo. I can't
remember how I got it going again though.

I have hardly any extra apps on it as yet.

It's also done an odd thing where a thing like a volume(?) scale appears
on the home screen (the one with the world on it).

Anyone seen this?

That, um, sounds like a crash. It does happen sometimes.

That's called the `lock screen', I believe.

You know the longish silver button on the left side, towards the top,
controls the volume, right? And the little rocker switch above
that turns sound on or off? And the one on the top right locks the
device.

I get the very occasional spontaneous reboot here, and it's not unusual to
see the volume indicator pop up for no reason (i.e. when /not/ touching the
volume button!)

Ah, is that normal?

You mean the slider? No, I mean an odd thing that spontaneously appears
at the top of the screen with a beeping noise.

Thanks, I figured those out already. ;-)
