Just like Microsoft Office...

Except you can actually switch that off. I am not sure if you can switch
the google one off.

Not using MS-supplied controls, you can't - you have to manually remove
the bloody thing to stop it running. Or so it's seemed here - any time
I've installed MS Office, I've had to track down the updater and clobber
it myself.

Easy - unplug the computer, hurl it out of the window, job done ;-)

Never trust a computer you can't throw out of the window - remember that
maxim.

Here, when it pops up you get the option of how often to run it, and one
of them is manual. After selecting that it never pops up unless you ask
it to.

My grass is so long I doubt it would sustain any damage at all!

You can? I'm sure I tried that, but it keeps popping up anyway -
asking if I wanted to consider the possibility of checking for an
update. Instead of just automatically doing so, which would be any of
the other options on the panel.
