UDATE: Grabbed the libx264 you mentioned, and symlinked it

ln -s /usr/lib/libx264.so.67 /lib/libx264.so.59

I'm now recording some old material using arecord, but here's the weird
thing, I've now got a symlink from the libx264.so.59 symlink to
libx264.so.67 and I've no idea how it got in there. ;\

It'll do for now as this install is due for replacement anyhoo.

I've got one from VLC for openSUSE 11.1 (which is the same age as 12.2)
but IT is already at 0.80:
libx264-80-0.80-3.1.i686.rpm
(it is an RPM package, of course, being out of a YUM type repo for openSUSE).
