Coriander in Lenny gives an image from a
Unibrain Fire-i provided "chmod 666 /dev/raw1394".

My /etc/motion/motion.conf in Lenny declares,
videodevice /dev/raw1394
and consequently these lines appear in /var/log/syslog.

May 10 10:59:38 joule kernel: [ 230.780159] ieee1394: Node changed: 0-01:1023 -> 0-00:1023

May 10 12:34:22 joule motion: [1] Capture error calling vid_start
May 10 12:34:22 joule motion: [1] Removed process id file (pid file).

My interpretation is that /dev/raw1394 is not the
device name needed for V4L.

Incidentally, motion would not start with the stock pid file.
process_id_file /var/run/motion.pid

process_id_file /var/run/motion/motion.pid
appears to be appropriate.

Thanks for any advice about the device name,
... Peter E.

Just guessing, but couldn't be that "motion" needs to use a "vloopback"
device for firewire cameras? :-?

I know nothing about which devices are directly suported by "motion" but
a simple search in their site it gives these results:
