I always tell people to back up their data at least once every month or before any critical operations, such as upgrading the OS ... and I'm the worse at not doing it myself[1] :) [1] It should be noted, however, that I do not back up my "personal" machines at home - business-related machines *do* get backed up. -- BULLWINKLE: "You just leave that to my pal. Indeed so, and when doing an upgrade I would recommend always doing a tar cvzf of /etc so that you have a copy of all of your configuration files, some of which may be highly customized.

If the latest RC2 is any indication, the process has worked nicely with one very major exception: video. The setup/configuration has been changed to deprecate sax2 and NVIDIA, especially older versions, seem to be a major PITA. I know that is the case here - I have to go through all sorts of gyrations to get video configured acceptably. If I ignore that issue, I've been quite happy with the upgrade results from both 11.1 and 11.2 as far as I can go. There are some problems that have to be attributed to lack of updated apps in the repos but that is to be expected at this stage. Put it this way: my experience with the current RC level has been way better than the 11.1 -> 11.2 or 11.0 -> 11.1 upgrades with the one caveat re: video. Just one isolated case so take it with a large grain of salt and hold off for a few days after the GM release unless you have a sandbox to risk. -- Will Honea
