From: PG on 24 Feb 2010 18:59 I'm having problems/concerns using password protection on project professional 2007 and received some good guidance from JulieS here on discussion a few weeks back, and I'm now aiming to establish if madness or bugs exist in everyones software, even with the latest updates? SAVING PASSWORD USING SAVE AS The way i'm password protecting a file is to go "File > Save As, click the Tools button (next to the Save button in Project 2007), General options" PROBLEM SAVING TO SAME FILE NAME. If i try to save with the same file name, an error code 0x8c04001b comes up, and wont save. AS A WORK AROUND i save the file (called FINANCE) as a different name,,,eg FINANCE2. then i change the original file to say FINANCE3, and then change my new password protected FINANCE2 file back to FINANCE. Its important i use the same file name as it's inserted in a master project file, and has interdependencies with other files, including resource pool. Does anyone see any concerns with me doing this workaround?? MY CONCERN DOING THIS WORK AROUND WITH MY MASTR PROJECT FILE As my master project file is linked to 25 other projects, i'm being cautious. Does anyone see any concerns in me doing this work around (saving as a diff file name, then changing file name to original name) with my master file with all its links to other projects?? DELETING PASSWORD Is anyone aware of a problem doing this, or better still a foolproof way to delete passwords?? Thanks in advance Peter
From: Rod Gill on 24 Feb 2010 20:50 It's certainly risky to save as a new file name then rename. Don't mess with DDE links otherwise you roll the file corruption dice. I saved a file with a password, closed, opened and save as again to same name and it worked as expected (Project 2007 SP2). I'm wondering if you already have a file corruption. With that many linked files you're high risk! Is the error happening with all files or just some? -- Rod Gill Microsoft MVP for Project - http://www.project-systems.co.nz Author of the only book on Project VBA, see: http://www.projectvbabook.com "PG" <PG(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:8AEE8AAB-ACB1-48C2-8F6E-7AE9F5D28775(a)microsoft.com... > I'm having problems/concerns using password protection on project > professional 2007 and received some good guidance from JulieS here on > discussion a few weeks back, and I'm now aiming to establish if madness or > bugs exist in everyones software, even with the latest updates? > > SAVING PASSWORD USING SAVE AS > The way i'm password protecting a file is to go "File > Save As, > click the Tools button (next to the Save button in Project 2007), General > options" > > PROBLEM SAVING TO SAME FILE NAME. From: PG on 28 Feb 2010 18:51 the error is happening with all files. I also have SP2. when you successfully saved with a password, did you follow the same process as me, which is "File > Save As, click the Tools button (next to the Save button in Project 2007), General options" OR another way?? thanks. Peter PS..sorry for delay in responding. I ticked "notify me of replies", but this discussion system is not notifying me. From: Rod Gill on 28 Feb 2010 21:10 Same method. Try saving a file to xml then back again and see if it still happens. If not, then definitely corruption. -- Rod Gill Microsoft MVP for Project - http://www.project-systems.co.nz Author of the only book on Project VBA, see: http://www.projectvbabook.com "PG" <PG(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:9B077398-93A2-445E-AD60-A3331425CC21(a)microsoft.com... > the error is happening with all files. Tks Rod. I'm not sure i understand your instructions as i'm having problems. I can save as an xml file OK. But when i go to open it, it opens via IE web browser (files where i am are saved on a shared network, which may explain this). Anyway, when it opens in IE, and go to file/save as, the only type options to save as are xml, xls or *.*, but not mpp. This password stuff with ms project is a nightmare! I did read here on discussion that strange things happened. I tried another work around by saving the mpp file with password to another folder/location. And that worked. But then when i went to open, it said wrong password, so i could'nt open it. I 've tried with 2 diff' files, and same problem. i'm looking at doing a re-install of the project software and see if that fixes things. It will take me a few days to do this...long story as need IT to help where i work (who cant by the way help with this project problem). I'll let u know how i go. And if i do succeed, i'm still concerned about finding a foolproof way to change or delete a password. rgds Peter "Rod Gill" wrote: > Same method.
