Ah, well that's interesting. Kudos to Apple then.

The open source rsync project page at http://www.samba.org/rsync/ says
they didn't add ACL support and extended attribute support until version
3.0.0.

I wasn't disagreeing with what Calum said. I was simply noting that the
SAMBA org rsync project didn't add support for ACLs until 3.0. This
indicates, as mentioned by the rsync man page snippet provided by Calum
above, that Apple added a patch for ACLs to the Mac OS X rsync.

Probably Apple donated their changes, and they were incorporated into
the public version 3.0.
