What tape of foil tape is used in iMacs? Would 3M (or any other
brand) of aluminum foil tape be ok...assuming it is aluminum. If not
aluminum, then what is it?

Depends on what it's for and where you are putting it.

Home-center aluminum foil tape will work just fine so long as you can
fit it like the original, i.e., in such a way that it is not shorting
any electrical components.

That tape does not have a conductive adhesive, while *some* tapes used
for EMI suppression do. Without knowing which type is used in the iMac,
it's not easy to know if hardware-store tape will be an
equal-performance replacement.
