Next: why windows updates sometimes don't ask me if i want to installthem?
From: John on 13 Jul 2010 22:08 i have the option for auto updates set to "download updates for me but let me choose when to install them". but regardless of that, windows sometimes on its own installs them on shutdown never even bothering to offer the update icon to confirm updates. why does it do this? it does not happen all the time, just sometimes and for no apparent reason and for any type of updates.

Go to start->run and type in gpedit.msc and click ok or press enter. Under Computer Configuration click the plus left of Administrative Templates. Then click the plus left of Windows Components. Click on Windows Update in list that appears. In right hand pane find: Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' option in Shut Down Windows dialog box. Right click on setting and select properties from menu. Change setting to 'Enabled' and click ok. Job done, you can close program. -- Pete Ives Remove All_stRESS before sending me an email

As someone who writes apps for .Net, why would you care if it gets installed? It's 20 something megabyes, hardly noteworthy these days. It doesn't get used unless some application requires it, and more are going to as we go along.

They just won't try to hide themselves and install on shutdown anymore. -- Pete Ives Remove All_stRESS before sending me an email |
