Big worry if tar balls get just a little bit heavier that the water
they are immersed in. Salt could make them gain weight. Dust can make
them heavier etc TreBert

As the sulfur (<5%) dissolves out they'll get lighter and float at a
SG of perhaps <.85 is due to other heavy and mostly toxic elements
that have to get refined out. Actual tar is close to the same density
as fresh water(1).

Crude oil composition us always complex and seldom if ever the same.
