Actually you might be right - I've never had a phone purchased on contract
but I got the impression that there was a certain amount if "it's knackered,
give me a new one" that was allowed, provided you hadn't obviously thrown
it at a wall.

My neice had a broken one lying around that she had had replaced in
November and just gave it to me over the Christmas lunch. Boxing day
I took into the Genius who said "yep its broken". I asked if he could
fix it and he said, "nope but we can replace it with a brand new one
for £139". Wrap it up quick says I.

It was on O2 PAYG for a day or two and then I got O2 to unlock it
(£15) so I could transfer to a Voda SIM.
