Thanks!
I own a computer with W98SE, too.

You mean KernelEx at http://x86.neostrada.pl/KernelEx/ ?

I installed it and then tried to install Firefox 3.05 . It complained
that my system wasn't XP and wouldn't install. Though I had read
elsewhere that Firefox WOULD install with that combination.

I also tried VLC. It also wouldn't install, saying it needed Windows
2000 or newer.

IMO this program doesn't work. :-(

Yes. KernelEx 0.3.6 + Unicows.dll 1.1.3790.0 from MS as described in the
readme.

That didn't happen to me when I installed FF 3.04. Also, 3.04 in w98se
auto-updated itself recently to 3.05.

I don't know about that. I don't do much with mmedia.

FF3 was the main target I was after. There were some annoying glitches
with Opera (all the 9+ v/s) that I was working around with K-Meleon, such
as whacky display in slashdot. FF3 doesn't have that problem and I like
it better than K-Meleon. I miss some of opera's features, but I can get
over that.

Also Wine in linux has been pretty good for me for the win apps I want
over there.

My KernelEx is 154 KB.

Is that the same size as yours before extraction ?

My Unicows is 261 KB.

Umm. Interesting, I am very curious as to why things don't work for
me. How many copies of unicows.dll and unicows.pdb do you have
on your system ? Where are they ?

I put mine in the windows directory. Details are ....

unicows.dll dll 252.30 KB 2004-12-07
unicows.pdb pdb 339.00 KB 2004-12-07

I installed unicows and then KernelEx. That's all. Is that all you did
? Or did you do it in reverse order and/or do something extra ?

The reason I ask is because I didn't create the KEXVER.INI file and
put it in Windows' directory (typically C:\WINDOWS\KEXVER.INI).
Did you ?

There is potential confusion talking about filesizes.

KernelEx036.zip
MD5 = 807c0df1bf3ae08011947bf4a059680c
CRC32 = c5e42824

Unicows.exe
MD5 = d030d8c3d1a46599230cac4ba70f5026
CRC32 = b19f6d5f

I first installed (or maybe attempted to install) KernelEx. Then I
executed unicows.exe. When the installer asked me where to put the
file/s, I told it Windows/System.

Maybe kernelex warned me (about unicows and where to install) when I tried
to install that unicows was missing (or something).

Repeat: Windows/Sytem - not Windows.

> I put mine in the windows directory. Details are ....

I put mine in the Windows/System. I don't recall where I got that
information. I don't see it in the kernelex readme, and as I look around
the web, I see confusion (some say Windows, some say Windows/System).

> unicows.dll dll 252.30 KB 2004-12-07

Yes but in windows system.

> I installed unicows and then KernelEx. That's all. Is that all you did
> ? Or did you do it in reverse order and/or do something extra ?

See above. Maybe kernelex stalled the first time when unicows was
missing. Maybe kernelex looks to see if there is a unicows but doesn't
'require' its System path or something.

No.

But kernelex related stuff is in the windows/system folder with that date
of installation.

http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=928 unicows.dll where to
install? - Put in c:\windows\system.
