Thanks for the reminder, I just checked mine and I'm good until
7/1/2009.

Thanks, I saved the link.
My "license" is "valid" till 2009-07-01.

I suppose you know how to avoid the "commercials"?

This may be a futile hope, but does anyone know of a way to manually
update the VDF of AntiVir's Free Classic Version 7 running under
WIN98SE? I installed it last week to replace CA's eTrust AV that came
FREE on the 98SE OEM CD. It finally expired, after threatening to do
so for a year or so, but not before blocking my access to the
Internet. Uninstalled it (all of it) and VOILA, the link was active
again. Anyway, I needed a 'new' AV for a trusty old machine.

I know, when I asked Avira support, they informed me that they
discontinued support of WIN98SE a while back, but I just like running
an old machine that has served me well (only 96 MB of RAM) and would
like to protect it from the Internet goblins, if possible. Thought
some enterprising individual on this NG might have discovered a back
door to do Version 7 VDF updates.

If updating Version 7 VDF's is not possible, any suggestions for a
suitable AV (and AS?) alternatives that will run under WIN98SE?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Don't know how to tweak Avira for your OS.

I recommend avast! Home Edition in your case. Used it for years.

KernelEx. Avast.

I run w98se and frequently encounter apps which don't support it, such as
FF3 and others which I want to use.

So I installed KernelEx to enable me to use XP apps. That might work for
Avira or maybe not; in which case Avast would be a good choice.

Whenever I see anyone posting to usenet using GG, I recommend that they
use a nntp newsreader and newsserver instead. GG is a terrible interface
compared to a newsreader's advantages and people filter you and other GGs
out so your contributions and questions are much less likely to be seen by
the people who you would want to see what you say or ask.
