If you are using a router this may help(from Avira's forums)

"Many routers don't support TCP fallback for DNS lookups. You have the
following options:
1. Configure the external DNS service (e.g. OpenDNS) on the computer
instead of the router (which has different disadvantages).
2. Create a fake entry for Avira domains in the hosts file, as I did:
62.146.66.187 personal.avira-update.com personal.avira-cdn.com
80.190.143.232 personal.avira-update.net
80.190.143.229 perspeak.avira-update.com"

worked for me

I did, a long time ago. Could that be the cause?

How would I undo it?
