I use the computer and the Net on a regular basis but I don't know a whole lot about it all, especially when it gets technical. I have an Acer Aspire AM5100-U5300A. I would like to speed this computer up, I would like a very good grasphics card without spending a fortune. Once I find out what I need I willo just go to ebay but I don't know what kind of meory, cards and such are compaitble with my machine. Help please.

Virginia,
You are posting in a Mac newsgroup. You have a PC computer. You are
very much in the wrong place. Acers are not Macs.

You can't know that Virginia is not into Hackintoshing. <g>

The first thing to do with a problem of slowness is find the
source of it. If you are on the net and it is slow but not
otherwise, then it is likely a simple case of not very good
broadband connection.

If you unplug from the internet and do various things and it is
plenty fast enough, then that is an indication.

If it takes ages to fire up, it might be because you have some
program loading and making various diagnostic checks. There are
various virus checkers that can do this when you fire up. They
can go off and fetch various latest filters and bug swats from
the virus checking software maker's servers.

If you are going to spennd money on your machine, more RAM is the
very first thing to get, it is rarely wasted dough.

The other thing might be that your hard disk is getting too full
and there is not enough room for caches and working space.
Remember when you did maths at school, there would be a margin to
do stuff in to work a few things out. The more margin the easier
it was sometimes! You can check to see how full it is. You should
always have lots of spare (at least 10%, I would guess)

If it is gaming that you are concerned with, then I guess a video
card is a critical factor after you have attended o my above
points.

I have to stop typing now because I can hear my enemies sneaking
up for an attack on me. They do this here, be carefully Virginia.

That's true. Which reminds me that we can't know anything in the final
analysis.

It's spam, posted to just about every newsgroup. It leads you to a
stupid search engine. There is no Virginia, Santa Claus.
