Hmmm3, we haven't tried that (so worth a go) as I /think/ it asks at the beginning if the printer is going to be used via USB or Network (although that may have just been on the Windows install [1]). It also seems to find the printer ok during the install but it seems to be the (manual) bit in the middle where it actually adds the printer is where things go wrong. Maybe (as you say) installing it via USB first them telling it it's elsewhere might be a workaround. > >I did a standard migration to 10.6, and then as soon as I wanted to use >it, 10.6 found or downloaded new drivers with no effort on my part. It could well be so thanks. T i m [1] On the Windows install you just press go, answer the USB / Network question, it shows you what printers it's found, you select the (typically, only) one and then it's done. No need to enter any 'Add printer' dialogue boxes so (therefore) less chance for any finger trouble ... 'it just works' etc. Maybe with a different driver the Mac installer would have done the same <shrug>. Ok, I did have to Google to connect the printer to Ubuntu but I think the first hit gave the solution and it worked 1st time. The fact it didn't work on the Mac wasn't frustrating, it was trying to figure out on the Mac how to resolve / experiment with it that was. I'm sure it must just be me, that I find it so convoluted and illogical, little pluses and minuses to add or remove a printer, test print options up in the toolbar, no obvious generic 'preferences' pane that covers everything to do with the printer. I find it easy on Windows (not surprising etc) and similarly under Ubuntu (I've added many printers under it now although most are found automagically, local or network). p.s. On the Mac (10.5), is there a way to get to / configure Bonjour or is it just 'there'?

First the potentially helpful suggestion: Ubuntu will be using GIMP, so digging there will tell you which GIMP driver to use. Then the probably useless suggestion: We had similar issues with our Canon C5045. Here the solution was: i) install the Canon drivers but don't create a print queue ii) set up a queue to the printer but with the generic postscript driver iii) switch the driver on this queue to the Canon one. Reason that this is useless is that the C5045 is a postscript device, whereas the MX350 isn't. But creating a new print queue might clean things out... Good luck, Dave

Ok thanks. When you say 'to use' do you mean directly (as in copy across to the Mac) or the actual name and therefore give us something to look up on the Mac? (sorry for what could be a dumb question but I'm not really familiar with the inner working of either system). > >Then the probably useless suggestion: > >We had similar issues with our Canon C5045. I think I'm happier now I have re-familiarised myself with this area on the Mac and happier that it looks like I haven't missed anything 'obvious'. ;-) Whilst 'she' (the main user of the Macbook) has said 'don't worry if you can't get it working' I know she would like it working and as they are nice people I'm keen to help if I can.
