I mean pick the same driver on the Mac, not copy it across.

You don't say which OS on the MacBook, 10.5 or 10.6?

Apple do list the MX printers in <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669>,
which corresponds to your second download from Canon, 10.30.3.0.

As this latter says it works on 10.5 and 10.6 I'd definitely go with
that - in general it's a good idea to ignore the CD that comes with the
printer and go straight for the updated version on the web, unless
there's additional software only available on the CD (in which case
install that and then go for the updated drivers).

Apple don't list a Gutenprint driver (so same as Gutenprint...), but I'd
be extremely surprised if Ubuntu was using anything else...

Finally see if Console gives any clues as to what's going wrong, either
under CrashReporter (try both ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ and
/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/) or CUPS (/var/log/cups/), as well as the
system logs.

Kind regards,

Dave

Ok thanks. I asked because I have heard of people extracting drivers
from Windows and using them on Linux etc.

I did in the header (10.5). ;-)

Ok, that's good then (that we are using something confirmed by Apple
etc).

I'll often give the CD a go first /then/ see if there is an update
option via one of the apps or the OS itself. If there isn't, I'll
check their web site etc.

I'll have a look when I go back. I did try to add that printer on my
Ubuntu laptop but it seems it needs to see it either locally or on the
net before you can.

I think you may have missed or not seen the other thread but it seems
it was to do with the Add printer pref not truly reflecting the actual
settings in CUPS. Sak pointed me the way to looking at the current
CUPS settings and that showed that the wrong printer (or driver) was
actually selected. Changing it to reflect the right one had it working
pretty quickly. ;-)

No idea why what happened happened and just happy it now works. ;-)

Hah, quatsch.

I saw that after my reply. Inspecting my print queues thus showed that
my fax queue on our C5045 was snarled, which similarly was not at all
obvious in the 'System Preferences' view.

One to remember...

Have fun,
