The fault lasted a very long time- I think the commercial arrangement involved had collapsed, something of that order. Going by that experience, I'd say finding an alternative source would make sense. For the past several years I've used the Dashboard widget instead. -- Peter

I pressed Update, and in /var/log/system.log I see this: Jun 11 11:53:46 aluminium Calculator[9961]: Error fetching new currency file:/var/folders/oi/oiUCq4vVEvy8LPgxo-EQYk+++TI/-Tmp-/FinancialRates.xml error:Error Domain=NSXMLParserErrorDomain Code=4 UserInfo=0x1005f1490 "zero length data" So something's gone awry at the other end, either technically or commercially. > Going by that experience, I'd say finding an alternative source would > make sense. I have an Epson SX105 printer. I was using Snow Leopard on an iMac, upgraded from Leopard, and this had been fine up to the application of Epson Printer Software Update 2.3.1. That broke it - all sorts of glitches made the printer unuseable. Curiously, my wife was able to use the printer over our network from a Windows PC :-( Also, the Gutenberg drivers were able to drive it. I sort of fixed it by recovering the printer driver folder with Time Machine but it was still buggy, so I decided to make a clean start (and do some tidying up at the same time). I took drastic action: 1. Create a new volume by partitioning the HD into two (if your HD is more than half full you can't do this!) 2. Use Disk Utility to copy the old volume to the new one. 3. Make sure that you can boot from the new volume! Disconnect the printer. 4. Erase the old volume and install Snow Leopard (or what have you) on it. Boot from it and let Software Update run as long as there are updates available. Repair permissions. 5. Reinstall the printer according to the instructions, and then let Snow Leopard update its drivers if required. 6. Copy what you need from the volume you created at (2) to the new installation (documents and applications - re-installing such of the latter as you feel won't just copy). You will probably have to re-register a lot of things. 7. Erase and delete the upper partition. This worked for me - and to my surprise, the re-installed system was noticeably snappier than before. And Epson Printer Software Update 2.3.1 caused no problems whatsoever. I have had few problems with OSX in the ten years I've been using it - and as far as I can remember all of them have had printer software problems as the root cause. Put I did get it from Palple's Software. Now to try it... John. -- Please reply to john at yclept dot wanadoo dot co dot uk.
