Not all the TB of it, I may hope?

Wrong in every respect.
For portable drives it does pay to have firewire.
The USB bus can't power all drives.
For some you need two USB ports to get enough power out.
The firewire bus otoh will happily feed any portable drive.

Moreover, bus feed limits you to 500 GB at present
which is smallish given the TB or more
that will be built into P's next iMac.

The latest 5400 rpm USB drives of up to 2 GB
have nice small power bricks/adapters.

For P: look at the Verbatim ones.
Their power adapter comes with two easy clip-on adapters,
for euro and somethin which may be the silly UK thing,

My iMac is using a 1.5TB samsung storystation USB drive which is quiet
and seems good value. I recently moved the disk in it to a lacie FW800
enclosure I had spare but the samsung USB enclosure is at least as good
as the others I've come accross.

I like the lacie D2 style enclosures because they seem (physically) well
made. I notice the current ones with ribbed surfaces use a completely
different power supply.
