I've got to chip in with my own experiences.

I've tried using a USB connected Western Digital HD for my Time Machine
drive and it was nothing but trouble with the thing hanging part-way
through back-ups. I checked the drive and reformatted but it made no
difference and it kept choking. I bought another WD drive with FW800
and it's been fine. The USB drive is now connected to my WD Live TV and
works fine for films.
