Thanks REM, that's it. Had to use the "external mirror" link
there to get 1.39 rev3:
http://softwaredownloadmirror.com/shareware/depeche-view-1.3.9-revision-3/9784370/

AFAIK this seems to be the last version without the nagscreen.

I noticed one major difference between v1.39 vs 1.42 (current).
The current version has a "file open filter" to allow opening of
/display text found in/ files with binary content and "wide character
files" (extended ascii?). The old does not. (setting found in the
"loading filters" menu appearing when you click the upper right "open"
button). Thus with the new version I am able to load files from email
folders, with the old (1,39)version not so.

The current version can if you enable the file open filter to allow
loading binary files (filter menu choice appears when you click the
upper right open button). Older versions of the program does not seem
to offer this option. See my reply to REM that I just posted. I do not
have Thunderbird here, but I've tried with Pegasus Mail folders. (Only
minus is of course it can only open one mail folder at the time,
not several at once. If you have all your email stored in one folder
then no problem)

But NOTICE:
"DView Base is limited to 10000 files, or 100 MB of text".

Crippled in other words, since the full version is only limited by
available memory. The old version (1.39) without the initial nag
screen does not seem to have this size limitation, but it on the other
hand can not display/load text from binary files.

The old version (1.39) found here
http://softwaredownloadmirror.com/shareware/depeche-view-1.3.9-revision-3/9784370/

CAN load binary files after all. Missed it. You must first generate a
dview-config.txt file. This is done with a click of a button in the
setup dialog (to get to it, click the setup button found in the upper
right corner of the main screen).

Then edit that file and find

// default for load binary file contents button
// loadbin no

and there insert:

loadbin yes

Btw, if you click the help button in main screen of v 1.39, the last
entry there is a link to the licence for that version. I can not copy
from the screen, but it says freeware for both private and commercial
use , and redistribution allowed...

Check the documentation for config file settings. A file
"dview-config.txt" in its home directory can disable the nag with

// depeche view base (not xe): to disable the runmode dialog
// on startup, set the preferred run mode here:
runmode base

You can configure lots of stuff in the config file.

Depeche view and its companion Swiss File Knife have lots of
possibilities but a steep learning curve.
