Cross Referencing doing odd things

Can't find saved word document
I e-mailed a copy of my mid-term exam to my yahoo e-mail account in order to finish my paper at home. I opened the word attachment from my e-mail and finished my paper, saving it as I went along. Why did the commands I placed on my own line disappear?
Windows 7 allows you to create your own command line. I had two. After powering down this weekend, I came back to Word and Excel and my own command lines had disappeared.
