I have no account at iTunes store. I do not want to buy anything there, and
don't expect I will in the foreseeable future.

Is there any way to get the free content offered there? I click on, for
example, a "Get Episode" link and it tells me to enter my Apple ID. Well when
I do, it says that I have no iTunes account (duh).

Am I forever verboten from any and all iTunes store free content?

Don't feel bad. I HAVE an iTunes account and when I was offered free
content, I clicked on the requisite hyperlink, and I got nothing.

Yes. iTunes content is bound to your account.

You need to register an account. You don't ever need to buy anything but
you do need the account. It's all part of Apple's requirement to keep
the record companies happy ... in other words any tracks you obtain are
effectively receipted to you and carry the same copy protection etc.

"Free" does not mean "in the public domain" or "free from all
restrictions on use".

Content may be free but still protected by DRM. That requires some way
of linking a particular copy to a particular playback device. Making
that link one that's also personal to you rather than just to a device
means that the content, free or paid, can be transferred to and used on
any device you own, now or in the future, capable of handling the DRM
scheme and connecting to a server for validation. Totally anonymous DRM
would either trap the content on the machine to which it was originally
downloaded or require the use of some unique token, such as a dongle, to
allow it to be played on other devices.

Content that is free and also free of DRM may nevertheless contain a
watermark that makes it possible to trace it back to the original
downloader -- a pointless exercise if the original downloader is
completely anonymous.

You may not like DRM, watermarking, or use restrictions, but copyright
holders require Apple to use them, and a system of personal accounts is
the least burdensome, most user-friendly way to manage it all.
