Connecting the iMac/ D505 direct to the cable modem using an Ethernet
cable 'should' get either on-line. Switch of the cable modem before
attaching, then re-power the cable modem.

What's with the z?

I tried a wired connect and it still wasn't happening. It's all nearly
working but not. However I may well have simply not done one basic
thing.

If the cable modem isn't power cycled after connecting a different
computer, it won't provide an IP address to the 'new' computer and
therefore no connection to the wider web.

If you wire straight to the cable modem then open a browser and try
connecting to 192.168.100.1 (front page for the CM information pages).
You should be able to find out if the CM is talking nicely to the
outside world.
