I am sure that this has been discussed before, but I need your
recommendations.

I need a freeware firewall for Windows 7 64 Bit Ultimate, a lightweight
one.
It must allow me to control processes and applications that try to
connect to the network/Internet, I need to prevent certain applications
from calling home.

Your recommendations, as always, will be appreciated.

Thank you.

I think I tried Sygate on Win7 when I was running it. I'm still running
it on XP.

TallEmu OnlineArmor and Comodo's firewall are top-rated for freeware
product; however, TallEmu doesn't yet have a 64-bit version of OnlineArmor
so Comodo is your best freeware choice.

Sysgate was purchased by Symantec back in Oct 2005 and hasn't been updated
since. That means its heuristics are out of date. See:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/sygate/index.jsp

Sygate supports:
Windows 95 (OSR2 & OSR2.5)
Windows 98, 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition (ME)
Windows NT 4.0 Workstation with SP6 or later
Windows NT 4.0 Server or Terminal Server with SP6 or later
Windows 2000 Professional, 2000 Server, Advanced Server
Windows XP Home Edition, Professional
Windows 2003 Server (32 bit version)
All of those are 32-bit operating systems.

You might take a look at PC Tools Firewall Plus™ 6:

http://www.pctools.com/firewall

I'm using it on one of my computers and it seems to do the job. Just
make sure that you turn your cable modem or other modem on after the
firewall is running. For some reason and unlike Kerio 2.1.5, it doesn't
start until the system is almost fully booted.
