Please - how can I tell Snow Leopard to not intercept any function
keys??? I've just switched to a Mac and still use WinXP and Linux and
use emacs and xemacs on all three. I am used to assigning functions to
the function keys (and shift-function, alt-function, etc), but OS/X is
grabbing a bunch of them for stuff like volume control and Expos.

It's really bizarre: for example, when I type ^h-k in emacs and then
hit the F4 key, it tells me I typed F12. F1 comes out as F14 and most
of them don't ever make it to emacs at all.

I've looked around various websites and see things like xmodmap (from
macports) and some other utilities, but the info I've read seems
inconsistent and appears to vary in different versions of OS/X. I just
want my function keys back and to have the special functions take
effect by typing Fn-Fx. Can this be done? In a way that won't break
when Apple updates OS/X?

Thanks!

David

In Keyboard preferences, check the box "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as
standard function keys". Could it be any more obvious?

In Mac OS X 10.6:
1. Go to the Keyboard preference pane.
2. Check "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys."

You're done. :)

Sometimes, it's *TOO* obvious. I've been using Macs for most of my
computing life, and I still sometimes hit these kind of issues - Can't
figure out how to ______. Look through prefs, not see anything, ask on
newsgroup, answer leaves me going "DUH! How did I miss that?"

It would be obvious if I had a checkbox like that :)
I'm looking at the Keyboard panel under System Preferences.
I see
Key Repeat Rate slider
Delay Until Repeat slider
Change Keyboard Type... button
Show Keyboard & Character Viewer in menu bar checkbox (checked)
Modifier Keys... button
Replacing Batteries... button
Set Up Bluetooth Keyboard... button
and the help "?" button

Where is this button of which you speak? I looked it up via google and
saw old references to a Mouse & Keyboard pane. Snow Leopard (at least
mine) doesn't have this. It has separate Keyboard and Mouse panes. Did
Apple remove this in 10.6?
