Then, as you say, iDvd is the one to go. -- David Kennedy http://www.anindianinexile.com

Each of the three Davids sent replies (thanks) and I have summarized them below, with my additions/responses/comparisons shown [thus]: In article <KsidnaDws-66q5vRnZ2dnUVZ8kCdnZ2d(a)brightview.co.uk>, David Kennedy <davidkennedy(a)nospamherethankyou.invalid> wrote: > When I did my powerbook, IIRC, then [the installer prog. when > doing the install] said it needed around 4Gb > although in practise it turned out to be less than that... > just under 2Gb In article <David.Sankey-063D5A.12005602062010(a)news.eternal-september.org>, David Sankey <David.Sankey(a)stfc.ac.uk> wrote: > The internal on my Powerbook G4 is Leopard, with 8.3 GB free, the > external with Tiger has 17.6 GB free, both 80 GB disks. > > Stuff installed on them is very similar (I don't remember, but it looks > like I did an import from the latter to the former). > [So by the numbers above, the difference in system size is 9.3 GB.] > > I recall disk usage on my desktop G5 going up when I upgraded that from > Tiger to Leopard, so that was enough to notice, say a few (5 to 10) GB. > [Consistent with the above numbers, but much more than the 2 GB reported by David Kennedy.] > > So I would say that it looks like it'll be very tight. Granted, we would expect 10.5 to be bigger than either 10.4 or 10.6 because Leopard is a Universal binary, whereas Tiger is PPC binary and Snow Leopard is Intel binary. I expected that from the outset. > Leopard needs more memory than Tiger, so if you aren't increasing your > installed RAM at the same time, you should expect a greater degree of > virtual memory activity, and that means more disk space will be needed > by swap files. My iBook G4 is 1.42 GHz and has 1 GB - should I upgrade it to the maximum 1.5 GB? Crucial are selling the 1 GB that would be required for 41.11 inc. Fair enough. But if I delete the iDVD themes, the iLife sound effects, and the printer drivers, it gives me another 4.65 GB, so back to 9.75 GB free, more than when I started. Thanks all! (still I have one question about memory upgrade above) |
