Do you use GarageBand?

I've written one song in GarageBand, so think I want to keep it, yes.

Then, as you say, iDvd is the one to go.

In my experience, that is not the case, less than 5 or 6 GB it starts
churning endlessly and grinds to a halt, because virtual memory cannot
fit in the free space on the startup volume!

That is good advice - thanks.

Each of the three Davids sent replies (thanks) and I have summarized
them below, with my additions/responses/comparisons shown [thus]:

[Consistent with the above numbers, but much more than the 2 GB reported
by David Kennedy.]

Granted, we would expect 10.5 to be bigger than either 10.4 or 10.6
because Leopard is a Universal binary, whereas Tiger is PPC binary and
Snow Leopard is Intel binary. I expected that from the outset.

My iBook G4 is 1.42 GHz and has 1 GB - should I upgrade it to the
maximum 1.5 GB? Crucial are selling the 1 GB that would be required for
41.11 inc. VAT.

So that gives a difference of 2.3 GB for the OS (consistent with what
David Kennedy recalls), negligible difference for apps, and 1.6 GB for
the developer tools.

1.57 GB it turns out.

Fair enough.

But if I delete the iDVD themes, the iLife sound effects, and the
printer drivers, it gives me another 4.65 GB, so back to 9.75 GB free,
more than when I started.

Thanks all! (still I have one question about memory upgrade above)
