Hi,

I need to upgrade my iBook G4 to Leopard (10.5) to be compatible with
iPad. The system requirements for Leopard say 9 GB of available disk
space. However if I am upgrading from Tiger, does anyone know from
experience how much extra I will need? I only have 9 GB available and
if I lose too much of it I think the machine will become unusable.

Here are some Tiger folder sizes which are perhaps relevant:

/System : 2.2 GB
Applications/utilities that came with Tiger : 4.07 GB
/Developer : 1.53 GB
/Library : 10.64 GB

I guess /Library is not that relevant. In the absence of anecdotal
evidence (which I hope you can give me), would it be fair to say that
the extra disk space required for the upgrade would be:

(9 - 2.2 - 4.07 - 1.53) GB = 1.2 GB ?

In case there was any confusion, that second line was not just the size
of /Applications/Utilities, but included all apps that came with Tiger,
but not those that didn't.

When I did my powerbook, IIRC, then it said it needed around 4Gb
although in practise it turned out to be less than that.

The same.
The installer first writes all new files to disk,
then it deletes the old ones in a final clean-up.
So it claims space needed for all files it might want to wri

You'll have some space left after all,

Yes, I thought that might be the case. I would be able to make
available an extra GB or three during installation by moving some stuff
off temporarily, so that shouldn't be a problem, but...

My question was exactly how much?
